Web sources to search for images part II

Rather than scan all the web to find the right images, as shown in my last post, you can search in some specific repositories.

Of course, one of your first nights spent looking for images will be at the:

1) National Gallery of Art

Link: https://images.nga.gov/en/page/show_home_page.html

NGA Images is a repository of digital images of the collections of the National Gallery of Art.

Thousands of open access digital images are available free of charge for download and use, you can access them by a detailed search form.

Images are available both for commercial and non-commercial purpose, you don't need for any authorization, all the pictures are totally of public domain.
Pics are mostly related to fine arts paints, draws or prints between 15th and 19th century, each picture has a detailed record, you can download it both in high and normal resolution.

NGA images aren't only for the web, you can use them also for academic papers, school reasearch, self-published books.

The Getty Search Gateway allows users to search across several of the Getty repositories, including collections databases, library catalogs, collection inventories, and archival finding aids.

The collections are made of several type of resources: paintings, prints, draws, books and entire archives; there are more than 99.000 free pictures.
Users can browse the collections or search them filtering by historical periods, artists, object types, etc., or by Open Content and use the results as they like, without asking for permission or paying any right.

3) Open Clipart

Simply GREAT! I love this site. Thousands of cliparts, buttons and images, both in SVG and PNG, totally free. You can download, split, compose or modify the SVG as you like without any loss of quality.
It is a totally self-sustained open source project.
Inkscape natively imports vectors from Open Clipart, furthermore you can integrate the OpenClipart library with LibreOffice or with GoogleDocs.
For developers, the OpenClipart.org search is interoperable with webpages by a json API.

4) Free images

“Freeimages was launched in February 2001 as an alternative for expensive stock photography. The idea was to create a site where creative people could exchange their photos for inspiration or work. The site has evolved into the massive community you see today — there are over 2,500,000 registered users and around 400,000 photos online.”

Pics are free, you can use them:
  • in digital format on websites, multimedia presentations, broadcast film and video, cell phones;
  • in printed promotional materials, magazines, newspapers, books, brochures, flyers, CD/DVD covers, etc;
  • along with your corporate identity on business cards, letterhead, etc;
  • to decorate your home, your office or any public place.
